Executive orders, 1892-1895.

These records document Governor John Young Brown's power and privilege to issue commands and instructions. Included are orders directing sheriffs or peace officers to apprehend parole violators and return them to prison; instructions for the three regiments of the Kentucky State Guard to train in August 1893; and an order permitting military organizations of other states to enter and pass through Kentucky during the "Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic" in 1895.

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard.
